Playing the bad guy

Ok guys, I am going to play the bad guy here. I preface my bad guy remarks with this, I do think that technology is awesome. I may be the clueless wonder when it comes to it but, I do love it.
Now I am thinking I would like to teach third grade. Knowing some of the parents in the school I work at, they can not afford to feed their children much less provide them the internet or even an old computer. I think that much of this technology is meant more for the older students. As younger students, I think that the face to face interaction does more to teach them then the technology. For those of us that are looking into upper grades, this may be more applicable. In the articles it mentions how the teachers Twitter or Facebook the assignments. As a parent of a seventh grader, I would love this! As an elementary teacher, I think the students need to be exposed but, I don't feel that they should be the centerpoint of our classroom teaching.

  1. I agree! The articles we read have more to do with the older children...I don't see using cell phones for many of the ideas brought up--it just seems beyond what a first grader needs in their life!

  2. I agree I do not plan on give our little one a cell phone until he is able to prove that he is responsible enough to keep track of his backpack and school supplies. I noticed last week in class (first grade students) that one of the kids had a cell phone pocket in her jacket so I know that some kids are getting them at a young age but I can not afford to buy I new cell phone every week. I think that computer time and games is the enough for the younger kids to most technology.

  3. Ditto! At young ages, cell phones are toys. They would only be a distraction. I can't tell you how many little kids I see pretending to have a cell phone (or at least a working one- hehe). Definately not age appropriate.

  4. I agree, cell phones can be used a lot more for things in the older grades. I don't think the elementary school kids need to even have use of cell phones at school. From Darlene Gilbert.

  5. I agree with you completely. Cell phones can be used in the secondary grades for many different things. However, I think to start using them in the classroom in elementary grades would be absurd. Students in elementary really need to concentrate on getting the basics first. I do know elementary age kids who carry cell phones to call parents and let them know that they are leaving the school. I think that it is mostly for safety puposes.
